Week 3
Throughout the course of this trip I have gotten to taste some wonderful entrees, desserts and wines. Quite a few of these items are ones that I have never tried before, and I can’t wait for you all to learn more about them!
Entrees
The first dish that I very much enjoyed is a steak with truffle sauce from a restaurant known as the Cave. Pictured to the left is a hearty piece of steak that was tender but still had a bit of a chewiness feeling to it. It was cooked to perfection and was juicy when I cut into it. On top of this scrumptious steak was a black truffle sauce. I wasn’t sure how well I would like truffles before this trip (because I’d never tried them), but this sauce was so flavorful and full of truffle goodness. It tasted a bit like mushrooms but a little earthier. There was also some garlic and herb flavors as well that rounded at the dish and made it that much more wonderful. I highly recommend trying this if you get the chance!

The second dish that I very much enjoyed was homemade ravioli with cheese, black pepper and pork cheek from Arrone’s restaurant here in Orvieto! I have always loved ravioli, so I was sure I would like it, but I had no idea that it would taste as good as it did. When it first came out, I immediately smelled the cheese on top and the aroma captured my attention. I liked how the cheese and the black pepper worked together with the meat in order to make the flavors pop out. The meat was also cooked very nicely. Overall, it was a nice meal and I enjoyed that I got a decent amount of wonderful ravioli!
Desserts
There are many things to look forward to in Italy and the desserts are no exception. I have had some absolutely phenomenal desserts and can’t wait for you to read all about them!
The first dessert was a white chocolate mousse from the Cave. When it first came out of the kitchen, I could not believe that it was being served in a Martini glass, this was something I had never seen before. When I took my first bite, it was creamy and delicious. It had white chocolate pieces in it and a layer of hot chocolate on top. This is perhaps the best dessert I have ever tried and will definitely be back for more!

The second dessert that I loved was the Nutella Crepes with chocolate gelato that I got from a restaurant in Venice. I was shocked by how big it was, because usually the bigger it is the less quality it has. But that statement could not be further from the truth with this dish. The crepe was cooked to perfection. The heat from the Nutella combined with the coolness from the chocolate gelato was absolutely to-die-for. I’m already a huge chocolate fan, and this dish added to my love of Nutella!
Wines
I have gotten to taste many different wines here in Italy and have learned to appreciate their flavors accompanied by food. Perhaps my favorite wine that I had here is called Barberani Castagnolo. It is a white wine that I tried at La Grotta Trattoria here in Orvieto. It had flavors of pear, peach, and a hint of vanilla. The body was a medium to a medium plus and it seemed to be relatively complex. Overall, it paired well with the lamb that I had, and I would recommend drinking this wine with a meat dish or something hearty.

The second wine that I absolutely loved was a red rose wine called Anita Aleatico. It had flavors of cherry, cranberry, a hint of chocolate and a smidgeon of chocolate. I personally loved that it wasn’t too dry, and it would pair nicely with a dessert or perhaps even a pasta dish. Overall, I loved the taste of this wine and will definitely get it again!
