Google Communities in the Classroom
I have only recently become involved in technology for an educational purpose, particularly Pinterest. This is due to the fact that so many creative ideas and ways of teaching can stem from this site. The interest I had in that form of social media led me to look into Google+ Communities which has a similar feel and result. It allows users to join communities that they are interested in and be exposed to many different and creative ideas that others have. It serves as a platform for people to introduce their ideas and to learn about new ones. This can be particularly helpful when considering education.
One of the communities I joined is called "STEM Educators". This community has a plethora of resources available including; teachers, educators, students, etc. One particularly interesting video that I cam across was called CALCULUS PRESENTED BY GUO CHENG GUANG. This was a video showing a young kid explaining what calculus consists of and how to apply that to problems. Another community that I joined is called "Mathematics Education (K-12)". This community sparked an interest in me, since it is directly related to the content that I want to teach. There were many different videos posted in this community that showed how to solve certain math problems. For example, one video called Important Question of Algebra brought up what students tend to struggle with in algebra and tried to resolve those issues.
How could this be used in the classroom?
Google+ Communities could be utilized in the classrooms quite well. The teacher could create a classroom page in which all the students join. Then the teacher could upload announcements, helpful information, additional educational material, etc. This could allow for the parents to become involved more in the classroom as well. It would allow them to be informed about what is going on in the class and any important updates that they need to know about.
