Final Week!
It’s crazy to think that my time here in Orvieto has come to an end! Looking back at my experience, I am realizing just how much I learned about the culture of Italy and how food and wine play a huge role in that. I would say that if you ever get the chance to experience something as amazing as this place, DO IT! Don't hesitate! Get out of your comfort zone and try new things, experience new places and more importantly, appreciate the time that you are there! It goes by so fast and you will definitely miss it!

When I first came to Italy, I thought of food as something to simply nourish you when you were hungry. However, after being in Italy for a whole month, I have come to realize that it can and should be so much more than that. It can be a time to catch up with friends, enjoy the cuisine and rest after a long day. I think that as Americans, we want to get in and get out as quick as possible. However, now I see eating/drinking to be a more social atmosphere and would love to continue that when I go back home!

What will I be taking back with me?
Honestly, one of the biggest things I will be bringing back with me to America is to enjoy meals. From eating out and the food & wine class, I have learned that the food and wine can (and often do) complement each other. Wine is not consumed by itself, but rather it is utilized to enhance the flavors of the food. Before this trip, I didn’t want to drink wine because it didn’t taste great by itself, but paired with the appropriate foods, it is something I quite enjoy! I also will be taking back the concept of eating fresher and locally grown foods. After eating such fresh ingredients, it will be difficult going back to college kid, but I will do my best to eat as fresh as possible! Also, my perception of what good, authentic food tasted like completely changed after this trip. I have learned that fresh and local ingredients make for an absolutely wonderful tasting meal. It’s also much healthier and much more appetizing!

Italy itself has taught me quite a bit about the dining culture, but if I hadn’t taken the food & wine class, I would not have known as many of the details as I do now! We got to go more in depth about the Italian cuisine and how to properly consume the food with the wine. I also made many great friends through this class and we had the opportunity to explore and apply the different things we were learning in class to everyday life in Orvieto! My absolute favorite part of this class was getting to go to the different wineries and see how much pride they took in creating their wines! They put so much effort into making every single bottle of wine the best it can be. I think this demonstrated how much Italians care!
