Shelly Fryer
Shelly Fryer is the epitome of an excellent educator. The way she cares for her students and their futures is awe-inspiring! She puts the needs of her students above everything else and works hard for their success. Shelly taught at Positive Tomorrows in Oklahoma City in which she interacted with many different students. The passion that she has for her students can be seen throughout her career, particularly when she worked effortlessly to help her students develop an original remix called "Welcome to room 108". It shows the progression of the learning community throughout the year and the memories that this classroom had together. Watching this video was both heartwarming and inspirational. This is the type of teacher I would love to become!
Shelly also strongly emphasizes a healthy and encouraging relationship with the students which can be seen in her post called "Building Relationships With Students #GSPD " Many of her students are homeless, therefore they really need a connection at their school. Recently Shelly and her class participated in "Global School Play Day" which is a day in which the students can play all day. This is particularly important for her students, since many of them do not have toys. This day allows for the students to be creative and come up with ideas of how to play, whether that be a game or a simple activity. It puts the problem solving and creativity in the students hands which is the best way to learn and engage with others! She also builds relationships with her students by having a classroom radio show, meetings and a variety of different games/activities.
Shelly is also an advocate for technology in the classroom! Technology is being integrated into many schools now, therefore it is important that teacher's know how to use it to allow for a positive learning experience. One of Shelly's biggest ideas concerning technology, one in which she referenced multiple times in her article "TECHNOLOGY 101 SKILLS FOR TEACHERS" is the idea of make and create. Basically, this means that technology should be utilized in such a way that students are creating things and increasing their creative capacity. She says that creativity sometimes does not come naturally to students. Therefore, encouraging them to use these types of apps will overall increase their creativity. In this article she also references some helpful apps that she recommends/encourages teachers to utilize. Shelly also utilizes technology in a way to stay connected with her students. She did this by creating a classroom page in which she can communicate with her students and they can communicate with her.
Shelly recently took a new position at Casady School in Oklahoma City. This is quite a change of socio-economic class compared to her previous school. However, her same classroom priorities are in place: safeness, community, care, respect, love, etc. She is excited for this new journey and I am personally excited to stay up-to-date! Overall, Shelly is a wonderful teacher and cares deeply for her students. She takes strides in order for her students to have the best education possible!
